Brew Review - Rogue Chocolate Stout
Tonight I bring to you a Rogue Chocolate Stout from Oregon Brewing Company (Rogue Ales? Which is the official name?):
I need to add more dark beers to the Brew Brain roster. I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll enjoy flavored dark beers a lot more than flavored light beers. It’s just more difficult to overpower a nice chocolaty or roasted malt flavor than the lighter caramel flavors. Here’s a chance to prove my theory. How did the Rogue Chocolate Stout do?
The beer smells like a big ol’ chocolate dessert. The big rich roasted and chocolate malts and cocoa are up front and center. GIT IN MA BELLAY!
The beer pours a very dark brown with a fluffy brown head up top with pretty decent retention power.
The taste is just awesome. It is chocolaty, but not overpoweringly so. It is very sweet, but it isn’t sickening sweet. I had some fear that it would just be too much of a good thing with the rich nose, but it isn’t. It’s just perfect. Rich dark roasted malts play along side the chocolate malts and a little semi-bitter dark chocolate kicker. The blend of dark rich flavors is beautifully done in my opinion.
This beer has a light, creamy mouthfeel with perfect carbonation. It is as smooth as a stout gets.
Overall, this is a wonderful sipping stout. The flavors are varied and blend very well together. I think it would be even better on a cool winter night rather than the cooling end to a hot summer day I had, but it was very good nonetheless. Highly recommended.
