Brew Review - Delirium tremens

Tonight, I bring you the first of my Belgian beers, Delirium tremens, brewed by the Huyghe Brewery in Melle/Ghent, Belgium (I hope I did that right). This is a Belgian Ale. According to the bottle it’s a damn strong one, too at 8.5% alcohol. I am 1/3 of the way through it as I type, so I would appreciate if you’d not hold spelling and/or typing errors against me as I slug this one back while finishing the post:) Also, it seems I’ve lost my photo of this beer when my card was cleared. Arg!

First off, I enjoy the original packaging of some of these Belgian beers. This one is a painted bottle with a foil wrap covering the top third or so, including the cap.

I didn’t get much aroma from the beer. What there was, was floral and grassy hops scents and some sweet malts. But not much of any of it.

The beer pours a cloudy yellow-orange color with a huge fluffy beaten egg white looking head on top. I may have to get the hammer and chisel out to get the lacing off my glass.

The beer tastes different from anything else I’ve reviewed so far. With the American beers, it seems there is a uniform code of conduct that starts out with malt, possibly a little mingling of ingredients in the middle, then the hops take over. This one from Belgium doesn’t do that. It all hits at once in one big full-frontal assault on my taste buds. It’s spicy, citrusy hops mixed in with sweet yeast flavored bready malts. It’s a very good balance. It finishes pretty clean and refreshing.

The mouthfeel is quite creamy.

Overall, I like this beer quite a bit. The alcohol content keeps it from being a sessionable beer for this lightweight, but a single bottle hits the spot pretty darn well.
