screw caps are evil

To the homebrewer, there is nothing worse than popping the cap off a fresh bottle of beer only to find it’s a screw cap.  The bottle is unusable.  This is a travesty, and the brewer should know better.  After all, they probably started out as a homebrewer scavenging for bottles.

From now on, screw caps will cost beer points on the reviews.  Oh, and difficult to remove labels will get a slap on the wrist.  Painted bottles that can’t be cleared of paint will get harsh language thrown their way (Rogue bombers!!!!).  I’ll probably save those for my really nasty homebrew and not tell people what’s really inside.  I’ll still happily drink the beer though.

Ok, there are worse things.

By the way, if you have painted bottles (Stone 22 oz. bombers for example) and want to get rid of the paint, here’s a trick I picked up from poster EdWort at homebrewtalk.  Soak the bottles in a StarSan solution, let them dry and wipe clean.  Drying time does seem to be a requirement.  I’ve found a one day soak is sufficient.  As the bottle dries, you’ll see paint flakes ringing the bottle.  Strange, but true.  Rogue bottles won’t come clean though.  I think they must bake their paint in somehow.
