Brew Review - Red Frog Ale
For tonight’s beer review, I bring you my first beer from Cica’s Blue Frog Grog and Grill - Red Frog Ale:
The beer pours a medium dark reddish color with orange highlights. The head in the photo is somewhat thin and fizzy. Later, after the beer warmed up a bit and I poured the second half or the bomber, the cap thickened up considerably into a large rocky head. The bubbles in the head are on the large side, and it dissipates pretty quickly to a thin ring around the edge.
The nose on this one is a bit malty, but mostly floral hops. It smells quite good.
The flavors are very much hops dominated. It isn’t over the top with hops, but they certainly outshine the malts in my opinion. It is quite hoppy, but not terribly bitter. The bottle claims 31 IBU’s, which is not terribly high for the style. It just goes to show how much flavor you get from a late hop addition without overpowering bitterness. While the hops dominate, the malt profile performs it’s “backbone” role well. It’s mostly a light caramel flavoring with a little biscuit thrown in there. It all gives way to the piny hops, almost IPA style, with a bit of citrus on the end. The finish is slightly bitter, but not much. Mostly, the sappy pine hops flavors carry on. It’s quite good if you like hops flavor, and I do.
This beer is light-medium bodied with sharp carbonation. It’s smooth enough for a hops fan, but probably a bit much for anybody who doesn’t appreciate a strong hops profile.
Overall, I’d definitely drink this again. I enjoyed it quite a lot. I’d definitely recommend giving it a try to anybody who likes hops. Any flavorful ale or IPA fans should be able to appreciate this brew.
