Brew Review - Lagunitas The Censored Rich Copper Ale

Introducing The Censored Rich Copper Ale from the Lagunitas Brewing Company:

I’d never heard of this brewery or this brew before picking it off the shelf tonight at the neighborhood grocery store. Anybody know the “censored” word? Ha! I really like the look or attitude or whatever it is some of these smaller brewers have, and I really like trying their beers. Sometimes, however, the stuff in the bottle is not quite as memorable as the bottle itself. So, how did the Censored Rich Copper Ale do?

Appearance: Well, as you can see, the beer certainly lives up to its name. It pours a rich copper color. It is mostly clear and gives a nice view of the non-stop bubble show. The head actually built slightly higher than you see in the photo, but I had the light wrong and let the head settle a bit while I was making adjustments to my kitchen table studio. It’s a nice looking brew, don’t you think?

Smell: In a word, “light”. I didn’t pick up any real memorable scents. What there was, was mostly fruity I think.

Taste: Up front are rich caramel malts and a toasty flavor. I’m reminded of Cheerios cereal. Possibly some coffee flavor buried back there. It is filled with flavor, but they are all fairly light. I know I said rich caramel, but it is light as well. Huh? I don’t know either. There’s a lot going on here, but they are all subtle, but very good. The rich but light caramel Cheerios with coffee instead of milk flavors were followed by balancing hops flavors that seem to build as the micro-seconds pass by. It’s all very confusing, but fun and enjoyable and much different than the other beers I’ve reviewed so far.

Mouth Feel: This is a nice medium/full bodied brew with perfect carbonation. It has a pretty smooth finish, but does carry a bit of a lingering hops bitter. I liked this, myself, but if you are not into the hops, the aftertaste may be a bit much.

Overall: Very interesting beer. This one was quite a treat for me. If this beer is off the beaten path, I suggest you find the path it’s on and beat it. This brew is definitely worth the hunt.

Enjoy your beer.
