Brew Review - Rogue Dead Guy Ale
It is my pleasure to present, from Oregon Brewing Co. of Newport, OR - Rogue Dead Guy Ale:
I had a couple friends over for an inventory reduction party and one of them brought this brew. He brought two different ales, so I’m happily stepping back to that category for a review of each. Now, if you are going to add inventory to an inventory reduction party, it had better be good:)
Well, the bottle is good, no doubt about that. The skeleton didn’t drop his beer. One point for the skeleton. And look - he’s smiling. He died happy. Was it the Dead Guy Ale in his mug?
Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy orange-amber color with a very large tan head. I had this one build on me very quickly and it did run down the mug a bit. That’s a first for non-wheats so far in my studies.
Smell: This is one of the more complex smelling beers so far. I get citrus, floral hops, some toasted grain and sweet malt. Lots and lots of sweet malt. The force is strong in this one.
Taste: In a word, awesome. The citrus scent translates into a nice citrus flavor. There is also a lot of sweet malts. It is very flavorful and nicely balanced throughout with just enough hops. The malt definitely dominates. In fact, it could use more hops and still be excellent, but it is just fine as it is. The Dead Guy Ale is packed with flavor. That said, it is not heavy - definitely a good session beer that could be enjoyed for an entire night out in the back yard.
Mouth Feel: It is lighter on the palate than I would expect - almost a little thin. It doesn’t take away from the flavor though. Carbonation is lower than some, but very acceptable. Smooth from start to finish.
Overall: This is an instant favorite. It has a lot of flavor and it is different from any of the others I’ve reviewed. It is balanced and smooth going down. This all adds up to one outstanding brew. An excellent inventory addition.
