Brew Review - Sunshine Wheat Beer

Today I bring you Sunshine Wheat Beer, my second selection from New Belgium Brewing:

I need a pick-me-up after the brutal experience with the blueberry beer from last night. Like a closer entering the game in the ninth the day after blowing the big save the night before, New Belgium Brewing gets another shot here. The Sunshine Wheat Beer label describes this beer as “using equal portions of wheat and barley malts. It is spiced with coriander and orange peel …”. Let’s see:

Appearance: As you can see, the beer pours a very light gold color with a nice little white head.Smell: I smell light malts, a little citrus and some spice.

Taste: Light and crisp as a wheat should be. Early results are, thankfully, good. I’m met up front by light malt flavors and some citrus. It finishes mildly spicy with some lingering citrus. I have to say, I like the way the orange peel and coriander take somewhat of a back seat supporting role. They mingle very nicely with the malts. A very well done combination of flavors.Mouth Feel: The feel on the tongue is light and tidy with a nice carbonation level. It is smooth all the way down.

Overall: While not a seasonal from New Belgium, this is a well-done wheat brew that seems made for the summer season. It is crisp and light, but the well-balanced flavors add a nifty complexity that is interesting to taste. I believe I have room for the rest of these in the cooler next time I’m out back by the pool.

Enjoy your beer,
