Brew Review - (Trader Joe’s) Josephs Brau Hopfest Pilsner

Updated tasting 9/25/2007:

The mystery that is “Trader Joe’s Brewing” continues. This cracks me up just a bit. Tonight’s installment is Hopfest Pilsner from Josephs Brau Brewing Co. Again, just like with the Jumping Cow, there is no web site to link. Why doesn’t Trader Joe’s just slap their name on the label and be done with it? Do we really care who brews the beer if it tastes good? There is nothing wrong with the Jumping Cow - I liked it. How did the Hopfest do?

Appearance: The beer pours a very clear, bright yellow with a nice little pure white head on top with decent staying power. Lots of bubbles keep the scene interesting.Smell: This one has a very nice strong floral hops scent. The name seems to fit so far.

Taste: The beer is called “Hopfest”. While it is fairly hoppy, it isn’t quite as much as I expected given the name.  I’m not saying the beer is bad because it isn’t. It’s definitely not my favorite either, but I’ve had plenty worse. The beer starts out with a very sweet but sort of empty malt flavor and finishes with enough hops to give it a hoppy character. It yeilds a hoppy spice flavor on the end and finishes with a touch of bitterness.  It is light and not unpleasant. Just not enough happening for me.

Mouth Feel: Carbonation is good and the beer is very smooth.  It’s a bit slippery on the palate.

Overall: The beer is OK.  If I was at a picnic and opened up the cooler to find a bunch of these, I’d open one and drink it without complaining.

Enjoy your beer,
