Brew Review - Firestone Pale Ale
I decided I need to add a bunch of beer reviews before my homebrew sticks five gallons of beer in the fridge. I stopped by the beer shop on my way home tonight and went a little crazy when I saw all those 22 oz. bottles. I did buy one six pack that I’d never tried before, but was sure I’d enjoy - Firestone Pale Ale from Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
I took my first sip and almost decided to just drink these for the rest of my life, or at least when I want a pale ale. It’s that good. The malts are very well represented and deep. It is not so much sweet as rich and savory and also a touch smoky. There is also one distinct flavor I was having trouble labeling, but reading the bottle, the description on the label nails it - toffee. Actually the bottle claims “…hints of toffee…”, but I think it is stronger than a hint. Whatever, it is awesome! Hops flavors are evident throughout, but shine towards the back end, and then the finish is a bit of grassy bitter in the aftertaste.
The carbonation is perfect, it is perfectly balanced and smooth as a good pale ale gets. I’d say this scores an easy medium body.
The flavors are very complex, and I’m sure next time I enjoy a bottle I’ll find more in there. Suffice to say, it is easily identifiable as a pale ale, but it is more complex and “complete” than most I’ve tasted. This one sits at the top of my list. Excellent brew.
Enjoy your beer,
