Brew Review - Stone IPA

I almost reached for a different beer in the fridge, but after the Arrogant Bastard last night, I just had to try another selection from Stone Brewing, the Stone IPA:

I believe this is the first IPA I’ve reviewed on my blog. How is that possible? I love IPA’s. I hope I picked a good one. Let’s find out:

The beer pours an orang/yellow color. Again, as with the Arrogant Bastard Ale, the head is large, creamy, thick and sticks around for a while. This bodes well.

The scents are very much hops dominated in my opinion. Hey, it’s an IPA, right? Big floral, small citrus, and some pine combine to give this a big, bold hop nose.

One sip and I’m sold. Hops dominate this one, but there is enough of a bready malt to keep things balanced out just fine. The malt sits on the front of my tongue while the back is assaulted by grapefruit, a little orange peel, something milder - maybe peach - and those pine needles. The hop kick on the end is a fresh bitter taste. This is quite a refreshing brew - enough to make it very drinkable, but also complex and flavorful enough that I’d classify it as a bigger IPA flavor-wise. It is quite good. This packs 6.9% ABV according to the bottle, and I buy that. The alcohol sneaks up though. I really can’t say I taste it.

The beer is quite smooth, has excellent carbonation and a has probably a light medium mouth fee. It is slippery, but definitely not watery.

Overall, I’d rate this a go get you some. Again, not a beer for lunch when you have important work to get done during the afternoon hours, but a very, very good choice once the day comes to an end.

Enjoy your beer,
