Brew Review - Bison Organic IPA

Tonight’s tasting is the first from Bison Brewing of Berkeley, CA - The Organic IPA:

Fortunate for me, I’m on a bit of an IPA kick right now. I have a couple more to review in the next couple nights.

Bison Brewing concentrates on organic beers.  According to their web site, they are losing their current building lease later this year, and have begun a cooperative with Butte Creek Brewing in Chico, CA.  I just happen to have a Butte Creek IPA loaded up for tomorrow’s review.

How did the Bison Organic IPA do?

The beer pours a semi-clear burnt orange color with a small white head. It smells of pine and floral hops and some orange.

The flavors start out with sweet caramel and light biscuit malt. This is an IPA, so, as expected, the hops take over and dominate the overall taste of the beer. The hop flavors are primarily citrus, some pine and a slightly bitter finish that lingers just a bit.

This beer has somewhat of a creamy consistency with fairly high carbonation. It all works very well.

Overall, this is a refreshing, drinkable IPA, but nothing overly memorable. I would gladly drink it again if given the opportunity, but I wouldn’t seek it out ahead of some of the others I’ve reviewed here. It almost tastes to me like the flavors would improve with a little more time in the bottle.

Enjoy your beer,
