Brew Review - Ballast Point Yellowtail Pale Ale
Tonight’s beer review is another from Ballast Point Brewing Company - Yellowtail Pale Ale:
The nose on the Yellowtail was a perfect balance of light sweet malt and floral hops scents. It’s a delicate nose, this one.
The pour is crystal clear yellow-gold with a this white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing to speak of.
The flavors are certainly light and crisp. The malt flavors are of a subdued sweet caramel and breadiness that lasts through the swallow. The malts are joined by light citrus hops flavors - sort of a lemon zest adding a bit of zing and tartness to the finish. There is no bitterness to speak of. I personally would like a bit more hops flavor, but for the style the brewer was pursuing, I’d say they nailed it. I can’t expect what isn’t supposed to be there.
The mouthfeel is fuller than I’d expect given the light flavors. The carbonation is on the high side, which contributes.
Overall, I pretty much pounded down a 22 oz. bomber while writing this short review, so I must have liked it. And I did. While light, the flavors are pleasant and well balanced. It is on the extreme end of drinkable. It doesn’t have a harsh note about it. I personally tend to favor the pale ales with a bit of a hop kick to them, but if a light, smooth Kolsch style is to your liking, I suggest you give this one a try.
