Big day o’ brewin’
I brewed up a batch of what is to become a vanilla porter today. I hope it turns into a first class brew, because those vanilla beans are expensive little buggers! I couldn’t believe when I saw the price on them. The beans pretty much doubled the cost of a typical recipe. Ouch! This won’t be a very frequent recipe.
I calculate an 80% efficiency on this one, so that’s great. However, I once again was about half a gallon short of five when I transferred into the fermenter. I just grabbed the hose and topped it off. Hopefully I won’t pay for not boiling, etc. I’ll definitely be tasting this one carefully before I rack over the top of the chopped vanilla beans that’ll be waiting in the secondary.
I also racked the pale ale into secondary tonight. It tasted awesome. Plus, it was crystal clear. Clean and clear, can’t beat that. With some carbonation, it actually would have been a very decent beer after only one week of fermenting. The ABV calculation showed right about 5.5%.
